In December, they ran a Pertemps qualifier at Leopardstown and that is an extremely important provider of clues when it comes to nailing the winner of the Final.
ln 2018 Gordon Elliott put SIRE DU BERLAIS in that qualifier, in which he had to fill one of the first six places to make sure he lined up at Cheltenham.
Davy Russell rode the horse “perfectly”, and put it into 6th place on the run in.
At Cheltenham it was ridden by Barry Geraghty (owned by McManus so, nowt unusual there) and the worst kept secret of the meeting was out, as the horse won the Pertemps @ 4/1f….extremely short for a horse running in a 24 runner Cheltenham Festival Handicap!
This year the same pattern has been followed.
On the 28th of December, 2019, Elliott booked Russell to again ride the horse he wanted to get in the first six that day, THE STORYTELLER, to make sure he lines up on the 12th, next week.
Going over the last, he was seventh, as they passed the line, he was 6th….job done.
The layers have not missed it as he’s currently 7/1 but, if you are looking for a “plot” horse, that would be it.
Best of luck next week and if you would like to help us raise £20k for horse racing charities, please visit this page on the website and select the charity of your choice.
Have a great day!
